edition). Particularly, from page 523-526, for sharpening your understanding of various concept
of the Balanced Scorecard and it’s four dimensions.
Group Retirement Services (GRS) is a division of London Life Insurance Company in
London, Ontario. The Vice President of GRS, Bill Kyle, implemented the balanced scorecard in
his division in 1994. Since that time, the industry and London Life have experienced significant
changes. Although the scorecard was not yet complete (after three years), the real issue here is
whether the scorecard has been useful to GRS and whether the scorecard could be improved to
assist the department in the future.
Learning outcome:
After completion of this case response, a successful student will be able to:
 Assess the competitive environment of GRS.
 Develop the understanding of the Balanced Scorecard.
 Develop the understanding of the impact of corporate level balanced scorecard on
the department level balanced scorecard.
Case response requirements:
1. What do you think of the Balanced Scorecard as part of a strategic management system?
(Maximum word limit: 250 words)
2. Evaluate Group Retirement Services’ Balanced Scorecard. Do you think it is useful?
Justify your answer. (Maximum word limit: 400 words).
3. What could be the reasons for lacking of annual targets and performance measures in the
“For Our People and Processes” and “Building for the Future” categories of the GRS
scorecard? (Maximum word limit: 250 words).
4. The case describes the corporate objectives for 1997 suggest possible measures for the
“For Our People and Processes” and the “Building for the Future Categories”. (Maximum
word limit: 250 words).
5. What should Bill Kyle do now? (Maximum word limit: 100 words).
