This essay aims to argue against the opinion that there are no sources of enduring competitive advantage in human resources or in HR practices. On the contrary, it’s believed that human resources help to build up sustainable advantage for firms which pursue competitive advantage through HRM (Barney & Wright, 1997). In this essay, we will use some HRM related theories or models like VRIO framework to analyse the question. At the same time, in order to make our point more vivid and understandable, we will use some company examples to demonstrate our opinion.  In this essay, it will demonstrate our argument in four components. Firstly, we will use VRIO framework and Porter’s competitive advantage model to analyse the sources of competitive advantage, which helps to find out the key factors that formulate an enduring competitive advantage. Secondly, we will discuss about human resource and HR practice as enduring competitive advantage to find out how HR contributes to enduring competitive advantage. Thirdly, we will point out some benefits for managers who pursue sustainable competitive advantage through HRM and HR practice. At last, we will find out the relationship between HRM and other competitive advantages like technologic competitive advantage or financial competitive advantage in whether low cost strategy or differentiation strategy.
