Case Study: Christian Dior
Fashion Designer Christian Dior created the New Look in 1947
With his partner Jacques Rouet, Dior pioneered licensing agreements in the fashion business. By 1948, he authorised the production of licensed Dior furs, socks, ties, perfumes and clothing in regionally separate production centres, thus spreading the brand name quickly around the globe.
Dior died in 1957 at the height of his success. His young assistant Yves Saint Laurent was promoted to artistic director, ushering in an era of other designers under the Dior label
Case Study: Christian Dior
Dior is now owned and chaired by Bernard Arnault, owner of luxury conglomerate LVMH
Dior held its first haute couture show in China in April 2012
Raf Simons is the current artistic director, and the Dior Homme menswear line is currently designed by Kris Van Assche
The company is also well known for its perfumes, makeup, leathergoods, watches and jewellery
A stable of actors and singers advertises Dior products, including Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Mélanie Laurent, Sharon Stone and Rihanna
So what has changed
from then to now?
We now have access to up-to the-minute information about fashion and fashion brands;
We can purchase inexpensive knock-offs of designer fashion within weeks of the seasonal runway shows from fast fashion companies such as Topshop and Zara;
We can write and curate blogs discussing our perspective of contemporary and historical fashion;
Can this be seen as part of the process of democratisation of fashion – a new order that is less hierarchical or controlled by traditional gatekeepers?
